I started with a Baofang BF-F8HP, followed by TIDradio h3 pair since i can switch it for GMRS purposes (primary intent), and then a Yaesu FTM-500 mobile to be used as base. The FTM-300 would have been sufficient actually and cud have 100 dollars without much loss of core functionality. I just did not know enough to say I will definitely wont need whats in the ftm-500. But it’s okay, mainly i don’t want to get into the sell and upgrade cycle!

I bought a Baofeng, and am very happy with it. Only problem is that the antenna contacts are SMA, and my 2m antenna had a BNC connector. 73 frm LA0CY

Basic ham license should be this easy to get. The test is outdated and time consuming.

You should discuss about the recording function which is why I am interested in the TR629.

I bought this antenna from Amazon, had it returned the next day. The 2 meter bandwidth was so narrow that it would only be useful on a single repeater after tuning. 70cm covered the whole band within reasonable VSWR.

Why not make a HAM radio that only receives CB bands? or have a switch so that the HAM radio becomes a GMRS or CB radio meeting all the restrictions and rules for that type of radio? Technically it should be already here.

Been waiting 9 months for my tech call sign to pop up 9n the fcc webste. Only ever heard 2 conversations on 20 meters. I listen to 10, 20, 40 and 80 often. Nothing but static. Two conversations in 9 months both on 20 meters. People online tell me it's not dead. Im gonna give it 3 more months and if i dont get my call sign by then i guess im gonna sell my stuff. I did learn alot though, never got to use it.

I received my general 4 months ago and made the choice to keep on studying for the extra since my brain was still in Study mode. Well I passed the extra test last month and fulfilled a 20-year dream of being an Extra. I like being a part of a group of hams that really wants to see ham radio grow in popularity and recruit the next generation of Ham operators. I am going to be part of the V E team at my local Ham club and join the local emergency communication group in my county.

i didn't know the 150 mile thing was void. feels lots better calling to people across the pong now. not a ham, just a cb guy that sticks to low power. i have no desire to out transmit my receive. thank you Ms Ria

I found upgrading to General as easy as upgrading to Technician. They hit me with a code test I wasn't expecting but it was plain language , so pretty easy. Tried extra but no luck

Rules not laws

The FCC was created to enforce the rules which were expect to generate revenues, as well as employ a handful of the lucky chosen to have a well paid cushy job which didnt require much effort. Its right up there with the Securities & Exchange Commission, and the better business Bureau.

I got my tech and then general within a year of one another and then waited 10 years before I tried for my extra. I made it first try and for years I always said general gives me everything I need I would never try for extra. But I became an EC and DEC in ARES so decided that if I was going to have those positions it would look more professional to have the extra class license. Do I really use the extra little bit of frequency space. No not really. Only once in a blue moon do I use them. Its nice to have.

Burt like to "tell it like it is". Why doesn't everyone tell the truth about him? He's a jerk and amateur radio (and probably the world) will be better off without him. How's that for telling it like it is? I have no idea why people think he's "funny" and tolerate his hateful comments. When somebody tells you who they are, believe them.

Have you consider using an ebike battery to charge these stations? I have a 52v 20ah battery with the xt60 connections.

I agree with you about the intersectionality of hobbies and cross-over knowledge base. I started as a Part 107, but became an amateur operation (KE9ANL) because the climate in Chicago makes it hard to fly (always windy).
